A staple of the Catrike lineup for the last couple of years has been their eCat electric upgrade. The Integrated Bosch motor setup for all models of Catrikes.
Providing amazing electric power to any Catrike you choose for years. It has been a great system that we have loved to work with since its inception, but it's time for a change. Heading into 2025 Catrike has decided to upgrade the eCat system.
The eCat has been tricked out with an entirely new motor kit. With Bosch’s discontinuation of the Gen 2 motors, it’s the perfect time to move forward into the Gen 3 of Bosch’s motor technology.
Everything in the eCat package is upgraded, from the motor to the battery.
There are many new performance upgrades on this new active line model as well as some smart technology inclusions that go above and beyond to improve rider safety and performance. This is the Active Line Smart System.
The best place to start is with what we had on the old eCat system. The Bosch Active Line Plus is the powerhouse behind the past eCat models. This is a motor with 50 nm of torque and a 240% assist power. It could hit a max speed of 20 miles per hour, had a max wattage output of 415 watts and could connect with the Bosch ebike system.
This has been a great motor for all of the years that Catrike has been utilizing it in the eCat upgrade. But overtime Bosch has made further innovations to their motor systems and it's about time we could tap into this power for electric trike riding.
So let's dive into the 2025 eCat upgrade and see what is different.
Every part of this upgrade is new and improved but the motor is a great place to start. The model is the Active Line pulse Smart System, looking almost identical to the old model but with an all black matte sheen and a new face plate.
For riding this motor has the same 50mm of torque, but its overall wattage has increased to give you even more support. Its got the standard 250 watt continuous output for class 1 electric motors, but when pushed to its limits on acceleration or going up hills it has a maximum output of 600 watts.
With a higher wattage output and efficient power model you get a 340 percent assistance output. That's 100 percent more pedal assist than last year's eCat model.
With all of these power increases it still stays in the legal limit of a Class 1 electric assist pedal vehicle and has a top speed of 20 miles per hour, So you can still take it legally where any other bike can go.
With a new motor with all these new features it's going to come with a new price tag. All eCat upgrades will now be $200 more than previous years, but it's not just with these performance upgrades that are bringing up the prices, there is so much more.
Beyond performance it also comes equipped with Smart Walk assist, which uses the motor to push itself as you walk your trike while you hold the minus button. And once the button is released for a small amount of time it will prevent the trike from rolling backwards, which is very handy while walking your trike uphill.
Now if we take a look at the name Active Line Plus Smart System. You may be wondering what makes this system so smart? And the answer to that is the all new integration with the eBike Flow app.
The eBike Flow app is the core of the new smart system and gives you a better, connected riding experience: it’s safer, more personalized, and more convenient.
Some key functions of the smart app are: The navigation. The Flow app can give you exact directions to where you want to go and sync with your system to give you directions on your display. It also can record your riding data and get valuable insight into your ride and fitness, and the fitness data can be easily synced with Apple Health.
You can even customize all of the assist modes in the app. Changing their support, dynamics, maximum torque, and max speed. Making it all the more customized to how you ride
There are many security features with the ebike Flow app. Like the ebike lock feature which allows you to set your phone as the passkey to your trike. So if your phone isn't nearby the motor will stay locked and the drivetrain won't move, making it more difficult to steal.
You can also keep tabs on the location of your trike through the app. Seeing where it's located at all times, and sending notifications to your phone when it's moved. As well as digital alarms it has acoustic alarms too so if it's moved too much without your phone nearby it will sound an alarm. All of these options make your trike loads more difficult to take.
If your trike does end up going missing though there are many quick help options in the app for you to retrieve it as soon as possible. With location tracking and the ability to create a document containing all the important info on the incident for the police - all based on the data from the ebike pass and the live tracking link.
Now let's go past the motor. Up near the handlebars we can see that the display is totally different too. This is the Purion 200 the direct sequel to last generation's display. This time its in a much more rectangular form and a lot more compact.
The small build of this screen is non intrusive and easy to read with bright and distinct icons with great navigation controls thanks to the physical buttons. And there's so much more on this display too.
You can get simple directions from the ebike flow app directly on the screen. Show a ton more riding information than previously possible making it easier to be more intune with your ride than ever before. And super easy to read with a high quality display that adjusts to the lighting you are in in real time. Not to mention its ergonomic shape that makes interacting with the display while riding a whole lot easier.
Now the last thing to talk about on this motor upgrade is what gives it all its power. The battery. Just like everything else in this loadout the Bosch battery is the same as last year's eCat, but with a new look and some quality of life upgrades. We are returning to the Bosch Powerpack 400 but with a sleek matte look and a more compact form. Taking the battery off and on the trike has also been switched up making it a lot easier.
Now we know all of the upgrades that are here, but how does it feel compared to last year's eCat? Boasting so much of a change with the extra wattage it's definitely worth taking out for a spin and see how it feels, so come on let's hop on this Dumont and get riding.
We are so excited to have this motor system. We still have a couple gen 2 motors still available, but so far we are loving the gen 3s and I can tell that you guys are going to love these new motor systems too.
Going forward this will be the motor system featured on the eCat, so once the old models are gone this will be the stock replacement, so if you want the cheaper price tag and are fine with the older features make sure to grab a gen 2 before they are gone.
