Caught in the Rain? Here’s What to Do When Riding Your Trike

No one plans to get stuck in a rainstorm during a trike ride, but when those surprise showers roll in, it’s good to be prepared! Whether you’re commuting, exploring trails, or simply out for a joyride, here’s how to handle wet weather like a pro and keep your spirits high while staying safe.

1. Stay Calm and Keep Riding (Safely)

The first rule of riding in the rain? Don’t panic. Recumbent trikes are stable, so you’re less likely to slip compared to two-wheeled bikes. Slow down, avoid sharp turns, and increase your stopping distance since wet surfaces can make braking less effective.

2. Find Shelter If Possible

If the rain is heavy or includes lightning, safety comes first. Look for a covered area like a gazebo, bus stop, or even a dense tree canopy (if it’s safe). Waiting out the worst of the storm can keep you dry and let you enjoy the rest of your ride without soaking through.

3. Protect Yourself from the Wet and Cold

- Gear Up: If you have a waterproof jacket or poncho in your trike’s storage, now’s the time to use it. Waterproof pants and shoe covers are a bonus!

- Improvise If Needed: No rain gear? Use a spare shirt, towel, or even a plastic bag to cover yourself or your gear.

- Stay Warm: If temperatures drop, keep moving to maintain body heat, but avoid overexerting yourself in the cold.

4. Keep Your Vision Clear

Rain can make it hard to see, so take extra precautions:

- Eyewear: If you have sunglasses or clear cycling glasses, they can help keep rain out of your eyes.

- Adjust Your Route: Stick to well-lit, familiar paths where visibility is better and obstacles are easier to spot.

5. Protect Your Trike

- Fenders Are Your Friend: If your trike has fenders, they’ll help keep water and mud from splashing onto you and the frame.

- Cover Your Electronics: Riding an e-trike? Use a plastic bag or waterproof cover to protect the display and battery.

- Post-Ride Care: Once home, dry off your trike with a towel to prevent rust and clean off any dirt or debris picked up during the ride.

6. Make the Most of It

Believe it or not, riding in the rain can be a unique and refreshing experience. The sound of rain, the cooler air, and the challenge can add a little adventure to your day. Just remember to smile and embrace the moment—you’re making memories, after all!

Rain happens, but with the right mindset and a little preparation, it doesn’t have to ruin your ride. Stay safe, stay visible, and enjoy the journey—because every ride, even a rainy one, is an adventure waiting to unfold.
