How to Protect Your Trike From the Elements

Protecting your trike from the elements is an essential part of maintaining it's performance and extending it's lifespan. Whether your storing your trike outside or riding in an area with a wide rang of weather conditions, here are some ways you can protect your trike from the elements.

Protect Your Trike

Use a High-Quality Trike Cover

Find a high quality trike cover that has a secure fit and is waterproof.

Install Fenders and Mudguards

Front and Rear Fenders: Adding fenders to your trike keeps water, mud, and dirt from splashing onto you and your trike’s frame, drivetrain, and other components. This helps offer extra protection to critical parts of your trike.

Storage Solutions

Indoor Storage: Storing your trike indoors, like in a garage or shed, is one of the best ways to protect it from all types of weather. Keep it off the ground to avoid moisture and to reduce exposure to cold or damp flooring.

Portable Shelters: If indoor storage isn’t possible, consider a portable outdoor shelter. These mini-sheds or bike tents are often made of durable materials, providing shade and a rain barrier, and can be secured to the ground to prevent wind damage.

Lubricate and Protect Metal Components

Regular Lubrication: Keep the chain, cables, and other metal components well-lubricated to prevent rust and corrosion. Use a wet-weather lubricant, as it’s thicker and better suited for humid or rainy environments.

Apply Rust-Proofing Products: Apply a light rust protectant or a corrosion inhibitor on exposed metal parts. Be sure to focus on bolts, nuts, and the drivetrain to help prevent moisture buildup.

Use a Windshield or Canopy for Riding

Add a Canopy: If you frequently ride in rainy or sunny weather, consider adding a canopy designed for recumbent trikes. It provides shade, reduces wind resistance, and helps deflect rain.

Portable Windshield: Some trikes support portable windshields that offer added protection from rain, wind, and debris. A well-positioned windshield can make riding in bad weather more comfortable.

Cleaning and Drying Routine After Each Ride

Dry and Wipe Down: If you ride in wet or dirty conditions, wipe down your trike as soon as possible. Pay attention to the drivetrain, brakes, and frame joints, as these areas are most susceptible to moisture damage.
