Can I Add an Electric Motor to my Trike?

Yes, adding an electric motor to your trike is definitely possible and can greatly enhance your riding experience, especially if you’re looking to tackle longer distances, hills, or rougher terrains with ease. Here’s what you need to know to make the transition:

1. Types of Motors

Mid-Drive Motor: A mid-drive motor is installed at the crank, directly driving the trike’s drivetrain (chain, sprockets, etc.). Mid-drive motors provide a more natural riding feel and better torque for climbing. One of our most popular motor options is the 750 Bafang Middrive Motor. This motor allows you to be able to easily conquer any hills in your way.

Hub Motor: A hub motor is a motor that's located in the hub of a trike's wheel and drives the wheel forward. Hub motors are a common choice for electric trikes because they're easy to manufacture and they are inexpensive. We do not have any option to add a hub motor after you get your trike. An option that comes stock with a hub motor is our Revolution eQuad 4X4 FS

2. Battery Type and Range Considerations

Battery Placement: The battery can be mounted to the frame, rack, or other areas, depending on your trike’s design. Placement matters, as it can impact balance; mounting it closer to the center or lower to the ground can help with stability. Most of the time here at Utah Trikes we mount the batteries to the side of the trike.

Battery Capacity and Range: The higher the capacity (measured in watt-hours, or Wh), the longer your trike’s electric assist will last on a single charge. Consider your usual riding distances and terrain—higher capacity is ideal for long rides, hilly areas, or when using full electric mode frequently. Many of our customers opt to add a second battery to their trike. This allows to the ride longer and farther.

3. Choosing the Right Power Level

250-500W Motors: Great for moderate speeds and flatter terrain, and often street-legal for more regions.

500-1000W Motors: Useful for steep hills, rough terrain, or faster speeds but may have restrictions in some areas due to higher power.

Pedal-Assist vs. Throttle: Many motors offer pedal-assist, which adds power as you pedal, while others have throttles that you can use without pedaling. Both of these are assist are great it all depends on personal preference and riding style.

4. Installation and Professional Assistance

DIY or Professional Installation: If you’re mechanically inclined, you may be able to install a motor kit yourself, though mid-drive systems. If in doubt, consulting a professional ensures safe installation and a proper fit. If you're looking for a good tutorial on how to install a Bafang Middrive Motor onto your trike check out our video on the topic here.

5. Legal and Safety Considerations

Local Regulations: Many areas have specific regulations around electric motors, especially regarding maximum power and speed. Make sure your setup complies with local laws to avoid issues. When in doubt we recommend checking to see what local laws and regulations say for specific motors and power outputs.

Safety Gear and Mirrors: Adding a motor means potentially higher speeds, so ensure you have adequate safety gear, like a helmet and mirrors, and adjust to the new power incrementally.

Adding an electric motor to your trike is a great way to expand your riding capabilities, making it easier to go farther and faster with less physical strain. Choose a motor kit that fits your needs, and take time to familiarize yourself with the added power for a safe and enjoyable ride.
