Why Tom Rides a Fat Cat V3

I bought the Catrike 559 in August 2018 after seeing a few recumbents go by on the coast highway. It looked like fun and decidedly unconventional which appealed to me. At the bike shop it was love at first sit.

It is hard to believe how comfortable that contraption can be compared to a regular bicycle, especially after hours in the saddle, or should I say hours in the rolling beach chair.

One year later I headed off on a hairbrained road trip across the country from Chicago to Santa Barbara, following the route that my grandparents took on their migration in a Model TT almost 100 years ago. My dad along with his 6 siblings was along for the ride back then. I traveled solo with just my trike and camping gear. With only my legs to power me I covered over 2,500 miles in 7 weeks averaging just over 50 miles per day. What an adventure!

Soon after the big journey I bought a UTCustom Catrike Fat Cat V3 with power assist from the good folks at Utah Trikes. I've had some fun off-road adventures with the Fat Cat over the last few years since then.

But the most useful it has been for me is as a tow vehicle for my surfski which I regularly haul down to the lagoon or beach here in Carlsbad, Ca where I live.

Turns out that both of my sports involve sitting down. Nothing like a good peddle/paddle session to get the blood flowing.

I'm 71 years old and plan to keep doing this for years to come.

Tom rides a Fat Cat V3 with a Bafang 750W Middrive Motor Upgrade, Rohloff 14-Speed Hub Transmission, and he has an Adjustable Utah Trikes Aluminum Cargo Rack. He's gone on many fun adventures on it and he especially loves to use it to tow his surfski!
