Why Richard Rides a Catrike Dumont!

-

Richard rides a full-suspension Catrike Dumont recumbent trike.

I love to ride my Dumont trike for several reasons. Clearly one of them is the safety factor of not having to worry about balancing at my current age. With three wheels on the road I feel stable and don't have to worry about tipping over.

The Bafang motor upgrade is setup with 9 levels of assist and the beauty of the way I’ve configured the 9 levels is the best part. I’ve adjusted the program settings on the Bafang 750W so that Level 1 offers very little assistance with a very gradual increase in assistance as the levels change up to speed number 5. This allows me to keep up with the rest of the cyclists and still get a substantial amount of exercise, allowing my heart rate to get up into the range associated with my age group. If someone jumped on my trike in speed level 1, they would hardly know there is any assistance.

Having a motor assit allows for continuous exercise as though you were at a gym working out on a stationary cycle. I very seldom get to speed level 5, but it is there when I need it. If I'm tired on the return trip from a long ride, or I encounter hills, or just want to have fun with very little peddling, or several other reasons such as hills, the motor assist is there.

In any case, this is my story on how I enjoy cycling, get some exercise, and keep up with the group.

By the way check out the Smoky Mountain cargo bags on my Dumont. The compact design requires no special rack, are easy to access, and have an incredible capacity for my tools, spare tubes, lots of clothing, and still room enough for the doggy bag of food on the return trip. I don’t actually have a dog.

By the way, I was born in 1940, and I keep up with the kids who were born in 1990-2000. You can do the math!
