My first encounter with cycling came at the age of 10. I rode a JC Penny bike with balloon tires which I used to deliver newspapers. Some weekends I rode forty miles roundtrip to the local strip mines in the Midwest to camp and fish. I had caught the cycling bug and hadn’t realized it. After returning from the Army, I bought a Schwinn 12 speed LaTour which I upgraded over a period of time with aero bars and a triple crankset. I moved to Florida full time in 1985 so I could ride 12 months of the year!
In 1999 I had Cabbage Heart (4 artery) by-pass surgery. Three months afterwards I rode a 100-mile bike ride and rode other Century bike events on week-ends. It wasn’t until 2008 thru 2018 that I became an Ultra Cyclist. I rode the “Last Schwinn made in America”. It was an aluminum two-wheel (diamond frame) bike which had a carbon fork, Aero bars, high speed wheelset, with a triple crankset. (See top photo. Schwinn Fastback, Easton Carbon Fork. 15lbs Total).
I’ve had several back and neck operations on old military injuries in between. Some of my more memorable cycling events were, St. Louis, Mo. “Moonlight Ramble”, Durango, Colorado “Iron Horse Bicycle Classic” and in New Mexico, The Santa Fe Century. It was during my stint doing Brevets (Ultra Cycling) that I bought my first two- wheel low profile recumbent bike which allowed me to ride faster and easier on long rides. I had two total knee replacements in 2018 & 2019. After the knee replacements I stopped riding. I just turned 82 recently and have suffered several physical setbacks I became bored and commissioned Harold at Utah Trikes to build me an electric Catrike Dumont with a Rohloff rear end so I could shift the bike even when fully stopped and on a hill. I have two batteries (one attached) so I can ride in multiple day events or cross country.
The Dumont has Schwalbe Marathon tires (practically bulletproof), a sophisticated suspension system, a good turning radius (9ft) and folds; allowing me to load my trike into my SUV.
I’m ready, fit and enjoying my wonderful Eon Green Catrike Dumont recumbent trike. It’s the most comfortable bicycle ride I’ve experienced. (See Below photo Ion Green Catrike Dumont)
I love my new recumbent trike! It’s the best cycling and health decision I’ve ever made!
